I have been trying to decide which standard I wanted to complete
for the GAME plan. I think I decided on
the natural disasters. My goal is for students
to understand what happens to a community when a natural disaster tears it
apart. The students have the Oklahoma
tornado in their minds. The students are
going to create a VoiceThread. I am
finding resources; however, I want to find more interactive resources for
elementary students and also to help my struggling learners. I need to figure out timing of the
project. I feel as though I only have a
little time in the classroom because it is not my class that I am afraid I am
making the project too big or too complicated.
Hi Jeanine
ReplyDeleteWhy don't you keep it focussed and short as a starting place? You could show a video clip, perhaps of the terrible Oklahoma tornado, and have the student choose a task that will show what they think needs to happen in order for the town to rebuild/recover?
I think the RAFT format would work well in this situation; here is a link that explains the strategy if you are not familiar with it.

Thank you for your response and for the RAFT format. I am going to learn more about it and try to incorporate it in my GAME plan.
DeleteWith the new coverage still on the natural disasters that happened and are still happening in Oklahoma, I feel that they will learn the most from this recent event. Then we can talk about others. Next year, I will be able to do more with the students on this topic.
Jeanine,
DeleteI think doing a lesson on natural disasters is appropriate with the current events. To integrate technology, you could show students recent news footage online and have students document things that they see or effects they notice. You could also have students create an inquiry question about other natural distaters and their effects. Students could research their ideas. Students could aslo see video clips on United Streaming. I look forward to hearing how your lesson goes.

HI Jeanine,
DeleteGlad the strategy may be of use to you. I have loads of Hurricane stuff if you ever want to compare natural disasters, and Bermuda has a (generally) great record of managing hurricanes because of the way we build our houses, which your children might like to compare to the houses that were damaged the worst in Oklahoma.

Lisa
Jeanine, I sometimes have the same problem, I begin simple and somehow it grows into something almost unmanageable. Then it is time to step back and regroup.
ReplyDeleteNatural disasters are in the news almost daily. It is a topic that I know my kids are fascinated in not only for the danger in but it brings our their compassion as well.
I need to focus on a standard too, that might help me. As you read in my post, I am feeling lost but I think my game plan isn't happening right now but more over the summer months. thanks for giving me some insight!
